Audience with Marco Maia, President of the Chamber of Deputies
In the last day 04 October, International Day of the Animals, representatives of the movement to protect and defend animals were received in Brasilia for an audience with Mr Marco Maia, President of the Chamber of Deputies, to request inclusion in the voting agenda of the bill banning the use of animals in circuses (PL 7291/06) and the withdrawal of voting agenda (whenever requested and) the bill decriminalizing the mistreatment of pets and domesticated (PL 4548/98).
The President of Vedder, George Guimarães, asked Mr Marco Maia (that the quality of the Mayor has the power to determine which bills go to the voting agenda) that is not voted on the bill 4548/98, decriminalizing the mistreatment of domestic animals. The project, excluding this item from the Environmental Crimes Law (9.605/98), already passed by the standing committees and is ready for the agenda of the Plenary Chamber of Deputies. “Our Constitution already guarantees equally to the protection of all animals without differentiating whether they are native, exotic, domestic or domesticated. This amendment is an unconstitutional act that comes only serve the interests of the industry rodeos, rodeos, among other, those who are suffering by prohibitions precisely mistreatment of pets and domesticated”, said Guimarães.
The presence of VEDDAS that hearing was possible thanks to the invitation of Mrs Janet Rock Pieta (EN / SP), that accompanied the delivery of a document attesting to the more than 130.000 signatures collected by various national NGOs calling for the prohibition of displaying animals in circuses. Were also given the almost 90.000 signatures collected by the group Looking Animals and the NGO VEDDAS asking not to approve the bill decriminalizing the mistreatment of domestic animals. The President of the Chamber of Deputies also received a copy of the legal opinion prepared by law professors Daniel Braga and Fábio Lourenço de Oliveira at the request of Looking Animals and VEDDAS on the unconstitutionality of this bill. A copy of all documents referred to was filed with the Secretariat of the Presidency of the Board on the same date.
