SHAC protest in Sao Paulo
(Brazil finally joins the global campaign.)
On 24 September 2010, Brazil participated in the Week of Action of the controversial international SHAC campaign (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty), pressing for the closure of the largest vivisection lab in the world, a Huntingdon Life Sciences, killing 500 animals per day in their labs and other torture thousands every moment.
The campaign for the closure of HLS has approximately 10 weekly protests worldwide (more than one per day) and now, for the first time, Brazil participates officially the world campaign, which is regarded as the most successful campaign against animal experimentation.
Marking the first protest of SHAC in Brazil, 30 animal rights activists gathered in Sao Paulo to protest in front of the office of Nomura, a company that owns 30% shares of Fortress Investment Group, which in turn has a loan vital to Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), whose financial health is in trouble some years ago. Without the financial support of the Fortress, the company would have been bankrupt. The loan matures in December 2010 and, Fortress if not renewed, the company will have to close the doors.
Front of a commercial building located at Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, area of the city of São Paulo, activists have exposed to the public and neighbors at Nomura, so very vocal, where the company chooses to invest your money: animal torture and fraudulent science. To better illustrate where does the money invested, was assembled on the sidewalk in front of the building multimedia apparatus showed that the pain and torture that occur within the lab and HLS on which Nomura and Fortress have direct responsibility.
For over two hours the activists held placards and shouted the facts about torture sponsored by Nomura as pedestrians and neighbors informed through the videos and pamphlets were distributed. An employee of a business located in the same building offered to leave flyers in every office building so that all its neighbors Nomura were informed about the dirty practices.
Members of the press were present to record the action and the military police were called, can only observe the protest, although very energetic, had a peaceful. One of the officials responsible for the administration of the building confronted the activists, but soon was forced to return to the interior of the building.
Activists paulistanos were very pleased to have finally begun in Brazil to the global campaign SHAC, screaming louder than ever cried! Having initiated this campaign in Brazil, new targets are being searched and the campaign will not stop until the HLS has closed its doors permanently!
